What an ice dam is.

When heat from the house melts snow on the upper roof, the water runs down and refreezes at the colder eaves. The ridge of ice that builds up can trap water behind it and push it under shingles.

Signs to watch for.

Thick ice along the eaves, large icicles, and water stains on ceilings or exterior walls near the roof edge after snowfall are common indicators.

Why it happens.

Ice dams usually relate to how warm the roof deck gets. Attic insulation, ventilation, and air leaks from the living space all play a role, along with gutters that are clogged before winter.

Stay safe.

Do not climb on an icy roof or chip ice with sharp tools, which can damage shingles. If water is coming inside, protect belongings and call a professional.

Prevention starts before winter.

Clean gutters in fall and ask about ventilation, underlayment, and flashing when planning roof work. The right approach depends on your home.
